Celtic Sword club has successfuly established links with most of the comprehensive schools in Swansea as well as one or two in Powys!
As part of the WAG 5x60 scheme we are currently offering initial fencing lessons to almost 100 pupils between the ages of 11 and 18 in Olchfa, Gowerton, Gwyr, Pentrehafod and Dylan Thomas schools.
We are scheduled to teach at Bishopston, Birchgrove, Bishop Gore, Gowerton, Olchfa (latest addition!) and Gwyr next term and are already booking schools for next January.
The initial trial was carried out in Maes y Dderwen school in Powys last term, where over 6 weeks we took pupils through a specially deveopled syllabus and on to complete the British Fencing Association Grade 1 examinations in Foil. This is a usefull qualification for the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.
The 10 successful candidates went on to hold a fencing demo during the school open day in May, and it was very impressive!
This term we have modified and extened the syllabus and lesson plan to include more actual fencing and we are aiming for an inter schools fencing competition next term, perhaps making this a regular once a term event with an annual grand event for the champions, but this is still in the design phase.
We have already recruited a number of teenagers from these schools into the club and out teenager section is growing rapidly alongside our junior section.
