We are planning a few Saturday all day workshops to teach people who have never fenced before the basics to enable them to join our club or one of the others in South Wales and fence!

We are now taking names for the first course planned for Saturday November 28th 2009. It will consist of one full day of instruction with a number of coaches available( depending on course numbers). We aim to teach people "straight off the street" of all ages ( 9 years and over) to fence in a day!

The course will cost £25 including insurance for the whole year!

We will use the experience we have gained in our 5x60 sessions to teach a small number of students in a very intesive way.

The course will start at 9:00 am and with frequent breaks and a lunch in the centre cafe, by 4:30 we will have made fencers of you all! We will use videos to show you what you are doing wrong as well as show examples of fencing on the big screen during your coffee breaks!

Bring a packed lunch and a drink or money to buy food in the cafe, you will be supervised at all times even over lunch and during the breaks!

You will get plenty of practice fencing with the others on the course during the afternoon!

The course will be FUN but it is not a play scheme, it will need commitment and concentration. It will will use real swords not toys and is conducted by fully qualified and experienced fencing coach.

We are lucky to have a purpose made facility with a cafe on site to offer this unique experience. Advertising will start in the next week or two, so get in quickly!

Ring Steve on 01792 369539 for details, for insurance purposes we will need all names in advance accompanied by a non refundable deposit of £10 to cover insurance through British Fencing for the whole year!

Two of the coaches from Swansea Fencing Club, which has been running in Swansea for over 50 years, have broken away and started a new club.

The new club, called Celtic Sword Club is based in the Gorseinon Development Trust building at Canolfen Gorseinon, meeting from 6:30 to 9:30 on Wednesday evenings.

The club has links with a number of Swansea comprehensive schools under the 5x60 initiative and the club kit purchased is made available at the schoold for classes, maximising use of this valuable resource.

We have been very lucky to receive a grant from the Welsh Sports Council to start the club and have bought over £7,000 worth of new equipment, and we are now able to cater for juniors ( 9 to 12) and seniors (13 to 80!) at the new club. Both beginners and experienced fencers can be accommodated and coached to whatever level they require. The grant has allowed us to keep costs down, we only have to pay for the room hire as all coaches time is given freely, in fact fencing with us for a month  is less than the cost of a curry  and makes you fit not fat!

With 2 coaches we are able to  deal with classes for different age groups at the same time as well as able to cater for mixed ability groups.

In fact the ethos of the new club is to encourage fencing for fitness not just to cater for those who wish to compete.

We encourage families and although we have only been up and running for just a few months we already have 4 families fencing with us!  Additionally we already have a range of ages and abilities fencing with us, including two Welsh youth Internationals and a International veteran, and beginners from the age of 9!

We would welcome “old” fencers from the Swansea and surrounding areas who would like to return to fencing after perhaps fencing with the Swansea or Port Talbot clubs some years ago, and are looking for a friendly re-introduction to the sport, or who would like to re-enter the sport as a coach or helper at the club, everyone is welcome!

It is unusual to find a sport where mother, father and children can compete at the same level and we encourage mothers and fathers to join in when they bring their sons or daughters along.
