2 CLUB FENCERS TO REPRESENT WALES AT UK SCHOOL GAMES PDF Print E-mail

Hot off the press....

Catrin Smith has been chosen to represent Wales at the 2012 UK School games at EPEE - and she is good at foil as well !!!! - She came second in Welsh Closed Foil last week!

Perhaps she could pick up a sabre in the spare time, she has obviously got the talent!

We have also Heard this morning that Bronwen Lee has also been selected to fence at sabre, Bronwen will fence as part of the Ladies Sabre team. Bronwen has only been fencing sabre for a year, having moved up from foil, her potential has been spotted and look what has happened! Bronwen started fencing at the club as a nine year old and has been a regular fencer since.

The event is being held at the Olympic Village in London for the first time! It is being used as an Olympic practice event for armourers and officials.

Well done to Catrin and Bronwen, the club and coaches are so proud of you!

SPONSORED FENCING FOR GHANA - 26th May 2012 PDF Print E-mail

We (the Dignams) sponsor a little boy in Ghana, he is in an orphanage. The orphanage are trying to buy a mini bus to allow children from the area to attend the orphanage school.

His name is Derrick Bond and he was found on the streets and taken in by the orphanage a few years ago. He is 8 years old now and a really happy little boy.

The orphanage is run by a UK Charity and is  very efficient and effective, all the money gets to the people who need it and is not wasted in red tape.

Details can be found here http://www.newlifeinternationalorphanage.org

I worked in Ghana for a short while and I have seen the poverty at first hand..

We would like the club to hold a sponsored event in the new year, possibly an 8 or even 12 hour FENCATHON to raise money for the orphange, please let me know if you are interested in participating!

The club is doing well for finances and it would be good to do something to build team spirit and for any money raised to go to a VERY good cause.

The plan, at the moment, is a continuous fight, in relays, we will need to "sell" time to sponsors so family and friends will pay perhaps £1 per minute, and every fencer participating will sell 30 minutes or as many as they can perhaps?

If anyone has other suggestions let me know, but a sponsored walk or something is too easy!

Club medal haul of 15 at latest Welsh Championships UPDATED PDF Print E-mail

Young fencers from the club attended the Welsh Youth Epee and Sabre Championships over the weekend of 22nd January and the Foil Championships on 5th Feb.

The first competitions of the year and we bring 8 medals home including 2 GOLD!

Each fencer acquited themselves well and the club, and all 3 coaches present from the club over the first weekend, were very proud of each of them.

Earlier in February fencers went to Cardiff and won 2 medals in a competition with over 55 entries!

Now at the British Youth Championship qualifiers, we win another 7 medals in all 3 weapons!

We will now have fencers from the club representing Wales at the finals in Sheffield in May in all 3 weapons and both sexes, quite an achievement for a small club!

Thanks to all of you!

Exciting club news - First Inter Club match PDF Print E-mail
Written by steve dignam
Wednesday, 10 August 2011 09:02

On the evening of the 20th October, 11 fencers, 3 coaches and 2 supporters travelled to Cardiff for the club's first inter club  match, with STAR club.

We fought 4 team matches wining one and just missing out in the other 3.

Our teams ALL represented the club VERY well, both adult team were LADIES teams and the Cardiff club was very impressed with the number of ladies we have at our club. I did point out that we had others who had not been able to travlel this time!.

The Cardiff club were unable to field ladies teams, having only ONE lady available to fence, so our ladies fenced a mens team and a mixed team, but still did quite well against the far more experienced opposition.

The return match at EPEE will be held at our club in November, watch this space!
